Kirkgate Market

Attracting more than 35,000 shoppers per week, Kirkgate Market is one of the largest indoor markets in Europe and one of the most important heritage buildings in Leeds. As the heart of the Leeds retail scene since 1857, action was required to address problems with the condition of the building and to ensure future success as a modern, vibrant market. IBI Group was contracted as Lead Designer for the refurbishment of the market.

The overall design involved relocation of traders, creation of temporary facilities, re-planned indoor/outdoor stall layouts, phased construction and working with a range of existing structures, both historic and modern steel frames.

Close liaison with market management ensured key market aspirations were achieved within the concept design and approved budgets, including flexibility; improved integration with the surrounding retail context; attraction of a wider demographic; a modern, future-proofed trading environment that respects the historical context; and the need to maintain trading throughout redevelopment.

The scheme design provides a modernized market that will connect new retailing environments and maintain its position as a key feature of the city centre.
